    Japanese Maple Descriptions

The heights and widths I have given are at 10-15 year maturity in Northwest Arkansas & Eastern Oklahoma.

ACER GRISEUM--"paper bark maple", trifoliate type dark green leaves, gray-green underneath, orange and yellow in fall, gets 25-30' tall.
ARATAMA--(Palmatum) dwarf, dense shrub. Brick Red to purple red leaves in spring. Has strong green color under the red. Needs some afternoon sun protection. Only get 3-4' tall. A good tree for a small space.
BENI OTAKE--(Linearilobum) Purple-red strap-like layered leaves, vivid crimson in fall, vigorous upright growth, 15-20’ tall not nearly as wide.
BLOODGOOD--(Palmatum) Large-leafed, upright grower, deep red color in spring and early summer, bronzing some in late summer, red again in the fall. Needs some afternoon sun protection. Matures at 15-20 feet.
BROCADE--(Dissectum) Mound shaped shrub, with bright orange-red leaves on new growth and a very cascading form at a young age if staked. Some bronzing in late summer. Orange-red in fall. Good for a small space. Needs sun and wind protection. Gets 4-5' tall and 3-4' wide.
BUTTERFLY--(Matsumurae) Small leafed stiffly upright tree. Pale green leaves with cream-colored margins. Margins become magenta in fall. Full sun is O.K. Gets 10-12' tall and 4-5' wide.
CRIMSON QUEEN--(Dissectum) mound shaped shrub with dark red leaves and a cascading form, some bronzing in late summer. Needs sun and wind protection. Gets 7-10' tall and wide.
ELEGANS--(Matsumurae) Large light green leaves, bright orange in the fall, layered looking limbs. Gets 5 feet tall and wide.
FIREGLOW--(Palmatum) Large-leafed upright grower, deep red in spring and summer, some bronzing in late summer. Needs some afternoon sun protection. Gets 10-12' tall and wide.
GARNET--(Dissectum) Mound shaped shrub, with orange-red leaves and a cascading form, some bronzing in late summer. Needs sun and wind protection. Gets 7-10' tall and wide.
GRANDMA GHOST--(Palmatum) Upright tree get 6-8 feet tall and 3-4 feet wide.
Amber,cream-white and pale green leaves. Spring growth can also include vibrant pink veining and red seeds to provide contrast.
INABA SHIDARE--(Dissectum) Mound shaped shrub, with purple red leaves and a cascading form, some bronzing in late summer. Needs sun and wind protection. Gets 7-10' tall and wide.
INAZUMA--(Matsumurae) Purple-red with green undertones, crimson in fall, foliage is somewhat pendulous. Tall, rounded shrub or tree. Gets 8-10’ tall and 3-4’ wide.
JAPANESE SUNRISE--(Palmatum) Upright growing tree with gradually spreading at the top as it matures. Green leaves in spring and summer, yellow tones in fall. Gets 10-12' tall and 8-10' wide. Has coral-red bark in the winter.
KAMAGATA--(Matsumurae) Delicate looking appearance, but durable and hardy. Bright, light green with red edges in spring. Small, round-shaped shrub. Gets 3-4' tall and wide.
KATSURA--(Palmatum) Yellow-orange leaves in spring, green in summer, yellow to orange in fall. Dense layered look, get 8-10 feet tall and wide.
MARGARET BEE--(Palmatum) Large leafed upright grower, deep red in spring and summer, some bronzing in late summer. Gets 12-15 feet and wide.
MATSUMURAE--deeply divided green leaves, orange red in fall. Upright, stocky small tree, gets 8-10' tall and wide.
MIKAWA YATSUBUSA--(Palmatum)Small tree with light yellow-green leaves early then turning medium green. The leaf nodes are close together, new shoots are short and stubby. Unusual and very cute. Will get only 3' tall. Needs afternoon sun and wind protection.
MOONFIRE--(Palmatum) Large-leafed upright grower, purple red in spring, bronzing some in summer, crimson in fall. Needs some sun protection. Gets10-15' tall and wide.
MURASAKI KIYOHIME--(Palmatum) Small-leafed mound grower, light green leaves with purple margins. Fall colors become gold or blends of orange. Needs some afternoon sun protection. Gets 3-4' tall and 5-6' wide.
MURE HIBARI--(Matsumurae) Deeply-divided light green leaves, upright grower, fall color is yellow to crimson. Full sun is O.K. Gets 10-15' tall and 8-10' wide.
NICHOLSONII--(Matsumurae) Small upright tree with light red deeply-divided leaves in spring, deep, rich green in summer, golden yellow to crimson in the fall. Get 7-8' tall and 5-6' wide. Needs some afternoon sun and wind protection.
NURESAGI--(Matsumurae) Delicate-leafed vigorous upright grower, deep red in spring and early summer, bronzing some in late summer, then crimson in fall. Some afternoon shade is needed. Gets 10-15' tall and 8-10' wide.
OGON SARASA--(Matsumurae)--Large-leafed upright grower, purple red in spring and early summer, golden-red in summer with age, then crimson-orange in fall. Some afternoon shade is needed. Gets 10-15' tall and 8-10' wide.
OMURA YAMA--(Matsumurae) Upright tree with cascading limbs with an arching, "weeping willow" habit. Has brilliant green deeply divided leaves, fall colors are gold and crimson. Gets 9-12' tall and 10-12' wide. Needs sun and wind protection.
ORANGEOLA--(Dissectum)--Mound shaped shrub, with orange-red leaves on very prolific new growth and a very cascading form at a young age. Good for a small space. Needs sun and wind protection. Gets 4-5' tall and 3-4' wide.
OSAKAZUKI--(Palmatum) Large-leafed upright tree with bright green leaves in spring and summer, intense crimson in fall. Full sun is O.K., needs some wind protection. Gets 7-13' tall and almost as wide.
OSHIO BENI--(Palmatum) Upright grower with large orange-red leaves, bronzing a lot in summer. Will burn in hot sun, so it needs afternoon sun protection. Gets 15-20' tall and almost as wide.
OSHU SHIDARE--(Matsumurae) Purple-red leaves, round-headed tree with a pendulous form like “Omurayama“, crimson in the fall. Gets 10’ tall and wide.
RED DRAGON--(Dissectum) Mound shaped shrub, with deep red leaves and a cascading form, some bronzing in late summer. Needs sun and wind protection. Gets 6-8' tall and wide.
RED EMPEROR--(Palmatum) Upright grower with large deep purple red leaves, holds color better than “Bloodgood” and comes into leaf two weeks after “Bloodgood”. Gets 15-20' tall and wide.
SANGO KAKU--(Palmatum) The "coral bark maple" is an upright-growing tree, gradually spreading at the top as it gets older. Green leaves in spring and summer, yellow in the fall. The coral colored bark brightens in the fall and winter. Gets 15-20' tall and 12-15' wide.
SAZANAMI--(Palmatum) Deeply-divided leaves, light green in spring, with center veins very light green and new stems are red. Rich green in summer, gold blends in fall. Needs some sun protection. Gets 12-15' tall and almost as wide.
SEIRYU--(Dissectum) ) Upright tree with bright green delicate looking leaves in spring and summer, crimson in fall. Full sun is O.K., needs some wind protection. Gets 7-13' tall and wide. The only upright growing dissectum.
SHAINA--(Palmatum) Originated as a witch's broom on a Bloodgood. Small-leafed upright tree, with the leaves very closely arranged so it has a dense layered look. Dark red color in spring and early summer, bronzing some in late summer, red again in the fall. Needs some afternoon sun protection. Gets 4-6' tall and 3-4' wide. Very tight grower with age. Good for a small space.
SHERWOOD FLAME--(Matsumurae) Upright growing tree with deeply divided burgundy leaves. Holds it color well into summer. Gets 10-12' tall and 8-10' wide. Almost identical to 'Burgundy Lace' but better color.
SHIN DESHOJO--(Palmatum) Small, upright tree. Leaves are crimson-scarlet in early spring, in summer-reddish green, in fall-crimson to orange. Get 8' tall and almost as wide. Needs afternoon sun and wind protection.
SHISHIGASHIRA--(Palmatum) Also called "Lion's head", because of the shape of the bunched-up, heavily curled, shiny dark green leaves, with rust edges on new growth and yellow in fall. Foliage is bunched like "Shaina". Only gets 6' tall and half as wide. Takes lots of sun.
SHOJO NUMERA--(Palmatum) Upright growing tree with very large deep red leaves. Very similar to ’Bloodgood’. Gets 15-20’ tall and almost as wide.
SISTER GHOST--(Palmatum) A broad, upright, tree. Spring leaves are light yellow-green with prominently veined leaves, sometimes with a slight pink tint. Fall leaves are yellow, orange and sometimes red. Gets 6' tall and almost as wide. Needs afternoon sun and wind protection. Needs some sun or will not be as variegated.
SPRING DELIGHT--(Dissectum)--Mound shaped shrub, with dark green leaves and spreading growth. Similar to ‘Viridis’. Gets 5-8’ tall and wide. Leaves are not as delicate as 'Viridis'.
SUMINAGASHI--(Matsumurae) Upright tree with deeply-divided leaves, bright red in spring and early summer, green-red in late summer, crimson in fall. Some afternoon shade is needed. Gets 10-15' tall and almost as wide.
TAMUKE YAMA--(Dissectum) Mound shaped shrub with very dark purple red leaves. Holds its color very well. Fall color is bright scarlet. Strongly cascading form. Gets 7-10' tall and wide.
TROMPENBURG--(Palmatum) Deeply-divided large-leafed upright grower, purple red in spring and early summer, bronzing some in late summer, red again in the fall. Leaf edges curl under slightly. Gets 12-15' tall and wide.
TSUKUSHI GATA--(Amoenum) Purple-red leaves with green veins, 8-10' tall, almost as wide. Needs afternoon shade.
UKIGUMO--(Palmatum) Large-leafed small tree with light green leaves with pink and white spots. The colors are very soft, never garish. Layered looking limbs. Needs sun protection. Gets 8-10' tall and wide. As it matures the top limbs start to cascade downward.
VILLA TARANTO--(Linearilobum) Crimson strap-like leaves in spring, green w/reddish overtone in summer, gold in fall, gets 6-8' tall and wide.
VIRIDIS--(Dissectum) Mound shaped shrub, with bright green leaves and a cascading form. Needs sun and wind protection. Gets 7-10' tall and wide.
